Greetings Martin, and muchos gracias for doing and posting this translation within hours of Avijit Wasi / another list member on WSMDiscuss requesting that I do this ! Among other things, as a list admin who is a little overrun with having too many things on his plate, I deeply appreciate this solidarity and engagement with this list as a list – as a community. But more importantly, by your doing so your post on the important news from Chiapas and on what is happening there at this tragic moment, has reached out – on this largely English-speaking list – to a much larger number of people.
I am taking the liberty of also posting this comment on a number of other international lists, where I know that there are people who will want to see this post of yours.
Gracias !

The affected areas are strategic within the neoliberal plans: The Tehuantepec Itsmo, who have defended their territory against the wind projects and now also against the Special Economic Zones and the mines. The thing is not very different in Chiapas.

They and other regional and national organizations for territorial defense believe that this disaster is going to be used by big corporations for the territorial occupation, profiting from reconstruction and helping in exchange of support to parties and votes (clientelistic cooptation).

Such is the case of the Indigenous Peoples' Assembly of the Isthmus in Defense of the Land and the Territory <http://tierrayterritorio.wordpress.com/> (see bellow for their account).

It had until now 1,266 replicas located in the coast of Chiapas.

Around 4,000 people are in temporary shelters in the municipality of Tonalá, both those who lost their homes and those who had to leave their damaged homes because of the risk of future earthquakes.

Now the shelters are full, because by the strong réplica in the September 11-12 night, many more families had to leave their homes," explains Nataniel Hernández, from the Center for Human Rights Digna Ochoa AC "food is needed in shelters but help is coming in very slowly." The Human Rights Center Digna Ochoa A.C. coordinates the collection of funds to support the victims of the coast of Chiapas togetehr with the Regional Autonomous Council of the Coast of Chiapas and the Tonalteco Civic Front. The latter is housing about 50 people in their offices.
