India in movement…, Caste in movement…
[I’m posting here an appeal for signatories to an International Statement of Solidarity re flagrant caste-discrimination and institutional harassment of Dr Subrahmanyam Sadrela, an Assistant Professor at IIT Kanpur in India, along with a detailed report on this caste atrocity that was published in a well-respected newspaper in India, the Indian Express.
[Please do take a moment to read the report; you might well be astonished to see just how flagrant and institutionalised caste still is in India, not only as aimed at the labouring classes and castes but also among so-called ‘intellectuals’ and in so-called ‘elite’ institutions.
[PLEASE NOTE that as mentioned in the appeal letter, please send your endorsements to Abir Dasgupta at dasgupta.abir at gmail.com <mailto:dasgupta.abir at gmail.com>, and not by reply onto this list ! Thanks :
Statement for endorsement on caste-discrimination against IIT Kanpur Associate Professor
Thanks for taking this initiative, Abir Dasgupta and others, and thanks Shiva Shankar for circulating this.
In solidarity,

Dear Friends, please consider endorsing this letter of protest against the harassment and casteist discrimination of a young faculty, Professor S.Saderla, at IIT Kanpur.
Please write to Abir Dasgupta if you wish to add your name to the letter. I have appended below a report of this atrocity from The Indian Express.
Thanking you,
Sincerely,
Shiva Shankar.

> The IIT-Kanpur (IIT-K) Senate has recommended cancelling the PhD dissertation of a Dalit teacher, who had complained of harassment and discrimination by four colleagues last year, on allegations of
> plagiarism, although the institute’s Academic Ethics Cell had found “no reason to revoke the thesis”. ...

> Defending his thesis, Sadrela said the similarities found were only in the introductory parts. “Literature survey is usually common. Only in the literature survey, the appendix and equations of
> motion, an overlap has been found. But these are standard procedures and overlap is common,” he said.
>
> “In my introduction, I have credited authors for work done in the past. My research is of 300 pages, of which 12 to 13 pages of introduction are under the scanner. Nobody has questioned my research
> and my findings, which are original. The recommendation to revoke my thesis is only a ploy to torture me,” Sadrela said.
