[On WSMDiscuss at least, we have been receiving fairly regular reports from list members from India as to the social realities of the corona virus epidemic there.  [For those on other lists who are interested, check out the list archives, at https://lists.openspaceforum.net/pipermail/wsm-discuss/ <https://lists.openspaceforum.net/pipermail/wsm-discuss/>.]  Here is an extraordinary, and deeply pathetic, letter that lays bare another dimension of the extraordinary situation that is currently unfolding in India under the epidemic, under the grim picture of bare statistics.  An open letter to all current and past office bearers and to all State-level associated bodies, it has been / seems to have been issued by nothing less than the Indian Medical Association, the country’s acme association of medical professionals. It makes clear the extraordinary – and dramatic - situation that has unfolded in the country as the result of the convergence of a whole host of forces, not least the extreme discrimination and intolerance that is deeply embedded and is now expressing itself at completely new levels, and where what is happening seems from the letter to not be being reined in by the government…

Dear Dr,

IMA has maintained utmost restraint and patience inspite of extreme provocations. Doctors have been abused, beaten up, denied entry and residence. Obstruction to cremation is the last straw that IMA can bear. If dignity is denied even in death, our patience and restraint lose their value.

We demand a special Central Law against violence on Doctors , nurses, health care workers and Hospitals by an ordinance.

WHITE ALERT

Several violent incidents later , we are where we started our journey. The Covid 19 has only made us acutely aware of our helplessness against mindless abuse and violence. Stigma and social boycott are everywhere. Harassment by administration is nothing but violence by the State. Our patience and restraint are signs of strength.

Our legitimate needs for safe workplaces have to be met.

Abuse and Violence should stop immediately.

 White alert to the nation.

All doctors and hospitals to light a candle as protest and vigil.

If the Government fails to enact Central Law on violence against Doctors and Hospitals even after White Alert.

IMA declares Black Day on Thursday 23.04.2020.

All the Doctors in the country will work with black badges .

Further decisions will be taken if suitable steps are not taken by the Government even after Black Day.

The state and local branches are requested to disseminate this communication to all members immediately.
