The US in movement…, Movements in movement…, Resistance in movement…

[Greetings ! This is a second posting (see also ‘People Not Profits Movement’, on April 25 2020) to alert you about the growing coalition plans that will launch in the US formally this coming Friday, May 1st 2020. This text is based on an alert I’ve received just today… :

In the US :
May 1st People's Strike Roll-Out

People's Strike Collective

Comrades :

This mail is to alert you about the growing coalition plans which will launch in the US formally this coming Friday, May 1st 2020. Initiated by Mississippi-based comrades from Cooperation Jackson, the ‘People's Strike’ effort has grown to be a fully-inclusive, non-sectarian effort, as inclusive as anything we've seen, embracing creative grassroots actions under a broad MUTUAL AID banner of unity not uniformity.

What to know: Though there are many potential demands and even more diverse local actions of all types and tactics - across the US and extending out internationally - the ATTACHED ONE-PAGE FLYER summarizes the basics of the ongoing campaign.

Also: Later today and over the next several days, the coalition will be rolling out various announcements, press releases, and upcoming plans - including 24 hours of on-line programming on May 1st - through all manner of social media and electronic communications. The website should go live later today, and in the meantime please check out, "like" and "follow" the pages on FaceBook [https://www.facebook.com/PeoplesStrike/?__tn__ <https://www.facebook.com/PeoplesStrike/?__tn__>] and Twitter [@People'sStrike].

As appropriate, please hashtag as follows:

#CoronaStrike, <https://twitter.com/search?q=%23CoronaStrike&src=hashtag_click> #GeneralStrike, <https://twitter.com/search?q=%23GeneralStrike2020&src=typed_query> #MayDay2020, <https://twitter.com/hashtag/MayDay2020?src=hashtag_click> #GeneralStrike2020, <https://twitter.com/hashtag/GeneralStrike2020?src=hashtag_click>

#PeoplesStrike. <https://twitter.com/hashtag/PeoplesStrike?src=hashtag_click>
In addition, attached is another flyer - this one focusing on one of the most basic and mass-based ways of joining the effort: by NOT SHOPPING on May Day. The leaflet here, produced by friends in Canada, has a focus on Amazon, Whole Foods, and other companies who have been particularly reckless in this period - and many of whose workers are preparing for an actual walk-out on May 1st.

Please note that many groups are planning their own actions based on the needs and possibilities in each locality. Here in NYC, still the center of the pandemic in the US, we hear plans of a plane flying a banner over lower Manhattan reading "Capitalism is the Virus!”. In Brooklyn, a number of bus drivers are apparently planning a coordinated "honk-in" as part of the coordinated plans. On-line, the group Popular Resistance has posted a good overview of some of the thinking behind this initiative, as well as their own take on what to do:

Whatever you do, or don't do, we hope that all of you receiving this will participate in some way - and alert your networks to this ongoing campaign, which will continue well beyond Friday. If we are to grow, learn, and build anything out of this current crisis, surely it must be by getting out of our individual, organizational, denominational, ideological, and geographic silos, and ACT TOGETHER AS ONE!

Beloved sisters and brothers: stay safe and healthy, stay strong and connected, spread the word and spread the love,

MattM
