We always knew there were going to be big numbers at today’s BLM march in Bristol, but we didn’t know quite how dramatic it would end up being. Well over 10,000 people turned out to the event today – which is a huge showing in solidarity with a guy who was murdered with impunity by cops for the crime of being black. Over the next few days I’m sure we’ll see lost of shit posted on social media trying to argue that George Floyd was ‘no hero’ and blah blah which is irrelevant to the fact that a group of guys pinned him to the floor and pushed a knee into his neck until he was dead and then carried on crushing his lifeless body. Then they clocked off home having done just another day at work. They did it because they valued his life less than a ‘normal citizen’. They did it because they could.

About 300 odd years of years ago, [Edward Colson oversaw a huge wedge of the UK slave trade](https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2017/apr/27/bristol-city-slave-trader-edward-colston), sending tend of thousands of men, women and children to die, work then die, work then be raped then die, work be tortured then die. Or some other combination. They did this because they valued their lives less than ‘a normal citizen’, indeed so little was the value of their lives that they were little more than commodities to be sold, profited from and used until the life was gone from their lifeless bodies. They did it because they could.

For decades there has been ‘a debate’ about facing up to Colston’s toxic legacy in the city [and while some progress was made, it was only on the fringes](https://www.brh.org.uk/site/articles/the-edward-colston-corrective-plaque/). This is because the levers of power are still controlled by the same forces that profited from the inhumanity of slavery. Today the people of Bristol said ‘No More’ and acted as moral people should. Tonight Edward Colston lies at the bottom on the river in Bristol Harbour, nestling alongside the bones of so many of his victims.

Justice for George Floyd. Justice for the victims of slavery. Justice over white supremacy.

Solidarity with anyone persecuted for the removal of Colston. We all did it!

Once again rebellious Bristolians demonstrated their inherent sense of good timing – [chucking Colston’s statue into the harbour where so many slaves have died](https://alternativebristol.com/the-people-of-bristol-sent-an-important-message-to-the-world-today-your-white-supremacy-is-bs-and-we-cast-it-into-the-river-of-history/) – as a response to the many racist police murders in the USA, and the institutionalised racism & lack of justice in the UK. Black Lives do Matter, and icons to bigots, racists & slave-traders do & will fall.

But after the carnival comes the blowback. Amidst bluster & faux outrage, and a total lack of historical understanding from Tories nationally & locally, A&SPolice have announced an investigation ([see their twitter](https://twitter.com/ASPolice/status/1269662034364436489)), and stated ([BBC link](https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/live/uk-england-bristol-52943550?ns_mchannel=social&ns_source=twitter&ns_campaign=bbc_live&ns_linkname=5edd59adad34ac0655ee1768%26Police%20held%20back%20at%20statue%20fall%20as%20stopping%20it%20may%20have%20%27caused%20further%20disorder%27%262020-06-08T07%3A42%3A59.021Z&ns_fee=0&pinned_post_locator=urn:asset:9678d2b6-b678-4a3a-a00c-83a3c5a0564b&pinned_post_asset_id=5edd59adad34ac0655ee1768&pinned_post_type=share)) they have identitified 17 ‘suspects’. Only 17 we laughed! In the face of any persecution, Bristolians, including the many thousands present yesterday, must express solidarity – adopt the [Spartacus](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spartacus) defence – ‘I’m Spartacus’, We All Did It!
Of course, given their own decision to disappear yesterday and not intervene, A&SPolice may not welcome too much scrutiny – as senior cop [Andy Bennett stated](https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/live/uk-england-bristol-52943550?ns_mchannel=social&ns_source=twitter&ns_campaign=bbc_live&ns_linkname=5edd59adad34ac0655ee1768%26Police%20held%20back%20at%20statue%20fall%20as%20stopping%20it%20may%20have%20%27caused%20further%20disorder%27%262020-06-08T07%3A42%3A59.021Z&ns_fee=0&pinned_post_locator=urn:asset:9678d2b6-b678-4a3a-a00c-83a3c5a0564b&pinned_post_asset_id=5edd59adad34ac0655ee1768&pinned_post_type=share):

We all did it. Dozens & dozens of people physically participated in the pulling down of Colston, the defacement of the statues & plinth, and many more helped roll him into the harbour. They were cheered on & applauded by many hundreds more of us. As the culmination of years of unsuccessful campaigning to have [a factually correct plaque attached to the statue](https://www.brh.org.uk/site/articles/the-edward-colston-corrective-plaque/), or have it removed to a museum for historical reference – in the end half an hour of direct action did the job nicely. We were there cheering & commentating, many of you were there too. We all did it.

But first up – know your rights!

At yesterday’s protest, [Bristol Defendant Solidarity](https://bristolabc.wordpress.com/defendant-solidarity/) & other activists provided [legal advice flyers](https://bristolabc.wordpress.com/defendant-solidarity/legal-advice/bust-cards/) along with a small team of Legal Observers (to monitor police misbehaviour & and any arrests). This morning BDS issued [this advice for any persecuted participants](https://bristolabc.wordpress.com/2020/06/08/advice-for-avoiding-arrest-and-staying-free/) – read it! There’s [more info here on arrest](https://bristolabc.wordpress.com/defendant-solidarity/advice-on-arrest/). Remember – if the police speak to you answer No Comment to any questions. Insist on your right to having a legal person with you – call BDS via 07510 283424 for assistance (or arrange your own legal support now if you think you may be persecuted).

Any attempt to persecute individuals involved in the protests will become a ’cause celebre’ – attracting very negative publicity for A&SPolice, Bristol Council & it’s black Mayor Rees, the Society of Merchant Ventures (& other cheerleaders for slavery & racist exploitation). It is & will be all of our work to ensure maximum opposition to, and discomfort for, these instituations/individuals. Bristol Council could take the sensible option now (as custodians of the ex-statue), and declare they have no interest in any persecution – does spineless Mayor Rees have any balls left we wonder? Already a prominent London barrister has offered pro-bono legal representation for anyone persecuted – [see here on twitter](https://twitter.com/seeyouincourt1/status/1269678726767357953) – and no doubt many more will follow! One can imagine the likes of Massive Attack, Banksy and many more being quiet generous in their support of an legal campaign & costs too!

But the key reaction to situations like this involving potentially hundreds of defendants is collective action & solidarity. Getting defendants together to plan their strategy; making sure all have the support/advice/representation they need; publicising their case; taking action in solidarity (police station & court pickets for example); all the while hammering home the point – British Justice & Policing is institutionally racist, and also used as a tool by the Politicians & ruling class to divide and rule our working class communities. The real crime here is not the overdue destruction of an icon to a mass murderer, but the very practices & legacy of mass slavery, profit & murder. So no stepping back – We All Did It!

Siempre supimos que habría mucha gente en la marcha de Black Lives Matter de hoy en Bristol, pero no sabíamos lo dramático que acabaría siendo. Más de 10.000 personas asistieron al evento de hoy, lo que es una gran muestra de solidaridad con un tipo que fue asesinado impunemente por la policía por el crimen de ser negro. En los próximos días estoy seguro de que veremos un montón de mierda publicada en los medios sociales tratando de argumentar que George Floyd no era un héroe y bla bla, lo cual es irrelevante para el hecho de que un grupo de tipos lo inmovilizaron en el suelo y le pusieron una rodilla en el cuello hasta matarlo y luego continuaron aplastando su cuerpo sin vida. Luego se marcharon a casa después de haber pasado un día más en el trabajo. Lo hicieron porque valoraban su vida menos que un "ciudadano normal". Lo hicieron porque podían.

Hace unos 300 años, Edward Colson supervisó una gran parte del comercio de esclavos en el Reino Unido, enviando a miles de hombres, mujeres y niños a morir, a trabajar y luego a morir, a trabajar y luego a ser violados y luego a morir, a trabajar y a ser torturados y luego a morir. O alguna otra combinación. Hicieron esto porque valoraban sus vidas menos que un "ciudadano normal". Una vez más, los rebeldes de Bristol demostraron su inherente sentido de la oportunidad, arrojando la estatua de Colston al puerto donde tantos esclavos han muerto, como respuesta a los muchos asesinatos racistas de la policía en los EE.UU., y el racismo institucionalizado y la falta de justicia en el Reino Unido. Las vidas negras importan, y los iconos de los intolerantes, racistas y traficantes de esclavos caen y caerán.

Pero después del carnaval viene el retroceso. En medio de las bravuconadas y la falsa indignación, y una total falta de comprensión histórica de los conservadores a nivel nacional y local, la policía de Avon y Somerset ha anunciado una investigación (ver su twitter), y ha declarado (BBC link) que han identificado 17 "sospechosos". ¡Sólo 17?! ¡Nos reímos! Ante cualquier persecución, lxs Bristolianxs, incluyendo los miles de personas presentes ayer, deben expresar su solidaridad - adoptar la defensa de Espartaco - "Yo soy Espartaco", ¡Todxs lo hicimos!
Por supuesto, dada su propia decisión de desaparecer ayer y no intervenir, la policía de Avon y Somerset puede que no acepte demasiado escrutinio - como declaró el oficial de policía Andy Bennett:  "Aunque me decepciona que la gente dañe una de nuestras estatuas, entiendo por qué ha sucedido", añadió "Sabemos que es una figura histórica que ha causado mucha angustia a la comunidad negra". Sigue cavando ese agujero, Andy.

Todos lo hicimos. Docenas y docenas de personas participaron físicamente en el derribo de Colston, la desfiguración de las estatuas y el podio, y muchos más ayudaron a llevarlo al puerto. Fueron vitoreados y aplaudidos por muchos cientos más de nosotros. Como culminación de años de campaña infructuosa para tener una placa correcta con sus crímenes pegada a la estatua, o para llevarla a un museo para referencia histórica - al final, media hora de acción directa hizo bien el trabajo. Estábamos allí animando y comentando, muchos de ustedes también estaban allí. Todos lo hicimos.

Pero primero, ¡conoce tus derechos!
En la protesta de ayer, el Defensor de Solidaridad de Bristol (BDS) y otros activistas proporcionaron folletos de asesoramiento legal además de un pequeño equipo de Observadores Legales (para vigilar el mal comportamiento de la policía y cualquier arresto). Es y será todo nuestra labor el asegurar la máxima oposición e incomodidad para estas instituciones/individuos. El Ayuntamiento de Bristol podría tomar la opción más sensata ahora (como custodios del ex-estatua), y declarar que no tienen interés en ninguna persecución - nos preguntamos si al débil Alcalde Rees le quedan algunas pelotas. Un prominente abogado londinense ya ha ofrecido representación legal gratuita a cualquier perseguido - [vea aquí en twitter](https://twitter.com/seeyouincourt1/status/1269678726767357953)- y sin duda muchos más le seguirán! Uno puede imaginarse a gente como Massive Attack, Banksy y muchos más siendo muy generosos en su apoyo a una campaña legal y también en los costes.

Pero la reacción clave a situaciones como esta que involucran potencialmente a cientos de acusados es la acción colectiva y la solidaridad. Reunir a los acusados para planificar su estrategia; asegurarse de que todos tienen el apoyo/asesoramiento/representación que necesitan; publicar su caso; tomar medidas de solidaridad (en la comisaría, piquetes en los tribunales, por ejemplo); todo ello mientras se insiste en la cuestión - La Justicia y la Policía británica es institucionalmente racista, y también es utilizada como una herramienta por los políticos y la clase dirigente para dividir y gobernar a nuestras comunidades de clase trabajadora. El verdadero crimen aquí no es la destrucción de un icono de un asesino en masa, sino las prácticas y el legado de la esclavitud en masa, el lucro y el asesinato. Así que no hay vuelta atrás - ¡Todxs lo hicimos!
