Solidarity in movement…, Repression in movement…, Resistance in movement…, Indigenous Peoples in movement…, Abya Yala in movement…, Peru in movement…

[I am writing here to forward an appeal for endorsement of a Statement in defence of Hugo Blanco Galdós, legendary Indigenous activist in Peru, who is now facing violent threats from the right in Peru following the making and screening of a film on him by filmmaker Malena Martinez. (The film is titled ‘Hugo Blanco G - Río Profundo’ (Hugo Blanco G : A Deep River’); you can find out more at https://www.hugoblancofilm.com/ <https://www.hugoblancofilm.com/>.) I happen to have had the privilege of meeting Hugo in the course of the World Social Forum process and developed a deep respect for him.

[Hugo is now editor of Lucha Indigena (‘Indigenous Struggle’, in Spanish). I think he was earlier Coordinator of the Confederacion de Campesinos del Peru (‘Confederation of the Peasants of Peru’) and closely associated also with CAOI - Coordinadora Andina de Organizaciones Indigenas (‘Andean Coordinating Body for Indigenous Organisations’). He was also member of the 1978 Constituent Assembly of Peru, and then a deputy and a senator there. He is now 85. (If you would like to know more about Hugo, you can also look up ‘From Indigenous Struggle to Ecosocialism’, at http://www.counterpunch.org/2015/05/19/from-indigenous-struggle-to-ecosocialism/ <http://www.counterpunch.org/2015/05/19/from-indigenous-struggle-to-ecosocialism/>.)

[For those not familiar with Spanish, I am pasting in below (a) a Google translation of the covering letter written by his daughter Carmen Blanco Valer, who is an activist in her own right, and (b), also a Google translation of the text of the Statement to be signed.

[Finally, a tip for those proposing to endorse the statement and who are not familiar with this (as I was not) : When endorsing the statement you will find two boxes at the bottom, both apparently ‘mandatory’. The first is your full name (first name and surname), and second, DNI, referring to Documento Nacional de Identidad (‘National Identity Document’, in Spanish). I have learned that you can put *any identification number there – government-issued, I think – from driver’s license up :

… Today, at 85 years old, Hugo Blanco Galdós, is considered one of the most important internationalist leaders for the struggles for agrarian reform and against the extractivism that pierces the bowels of our territories.

Atentamente:

Carmen Blanco Valer

Comrades all !

I am Carmen Blanco Valer, Hugo's eldest daughter and I make use of the list of
subscribers of Lucha Indígena and contact them for the following:

As a result of the Peruvian alternative media Wayka showing the documentary
"Hugo Blanco G, - Río Profundo" https://www.hugoblancofilm.com/ <https://www.hugoblancofilm.com/> last
week, virulent reactions by far-right groups have emerged against my father and
against the filmmaker Malena Martinez.

Both the Fujimorista Marta Chavez and groups of ex-military, civil guards, etc.
have been publishing communiqués in which they accuse Hugo of serious crimes
against Human Rights and are outraged by the support provided by the Ministry
of Culture to the projection of the movie.

In the face of these serious accusations, a group of comrades took the initiative
to vindicate Hugo and his struggles and drafted a text to which he would ask
them to adhere in solidarity. Once we can gather a significant number of
signatures, it will be published in Peru.

Attentively:

Carmen Blanco Valer

Here is the text and below the link you can make the accessions.

In demand of Hugo Blanco

Concerning the exhibition of the award-winning documentary “Hubo Blanco Río Profundo”, a group of former military officers colluded with a series of former right-wing politicians, together with journalists from virtual publications with titles like El Montonero, have issued some pronouncements naming the former member of the 1978 Constituent Assembly, deputy and senator, democratically elected by the sovereign people, Hugo Blanco Galdós, as a terrorist and murderer.

We, the undersigned, citizens of Latin America and beyond, repudiate those words that, fifty years after the events that raised the impoverished peasants in the Valley of the Convention, seek to criminalize and discredit the politician and activist for the rights of the nature. Today, at 85 years old, Hugo Blanco Galdós, is considered one of the most important internationalist leaders for the struggles of agrarian reform, and against extractivism that pierces the bowels of our territories.

Hugo is an example for his tireless commitment to justice and to the people, be it in Pucallpa, Cajamarca, La Convencion, Chiapas or Cauca. Also because he is one of the few left-wing leaders who today has been able to take a significant turn towards another fight for protest: for the environment. Blanco summarizes it relentlessly: "Before it was fighting for socialism, today it is about the fight for the survival of the species."

This life dedicated to the fight for justice, democracy and the defense of Mother Earth has been masterfully represented by Malena Martínez in "Hugo Blanco: Rio Profundo", which has caused the unacceptable reaction of these emblematic characters of the Right caveman, who consolidate in their ranks the harshest of Peruvian authoritarianism, and who fear the example of this son of the hills of Cusco, where even today the cry "land or death: we will win" resounds.
