Viruses in movement…, People in movement…, Freedoms in movement…, Justice in movement…, The US in movement…

[The US is aflame, its people are afire… and there is great deal going on ! As you might have noticed, many of my more recent posts on what’s happening in the US, or elsewhere but in solidarity with what is happening in the US (as well as some other international news !), have come from an initiative / website / bulletin called ‘Popular Resistance’ (https://popularresistance.org/ <https://popularresistance.org/>) – which draws not from the mainstream press but from ‘the (rebellious) margins’. Today, and rather than post articles from there, I am forwarding the whole issue – and especially if you’re interested in knowing what’s rising in the US, and to some extent globally, I invite you to consider subscribing to it ! :

Oakland: Restraining Order Restricts Teargas, Flashbangs And Projectiles <https://popularresistance.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=33602bebba8fb7dd6e71fb413&id=3fa4d3d8c1&e=e8ec62838c>By IndyBay.org <http://indybay.org/>. On June 18, 2020, at 1 pm, an Oakland judge issued a Temporary Restraining Order (TRO) and Order to Show Cause against the Oakland Police Department. The order was filed by civil rights attorneys Dan Siegel and Walter Riley and National Lawyers Guild - San Francisco Bay Area attorney James Burch. This initial victory is part of a larger lawsuit by the attorneys on behalf of two organizational plaintiffs, Anti Police-Terror Project and Community Ready Corps, and individual plaintiffs, Oakland Tech student Akil Riley and protestors Ian Mcdonnell, Nico Nada, Azize Ngo, and Jennifer Li on behalf of themselves and... -more- <https://popularresistance.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=33602bebba8fb7dd6e71fb413&id=98c5be73e1&e=e8ec62838c>

Churchill, Columbus And Leopold Fall Down <https://popularresistance.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=33602bebba8fb7dd6e71fb413&id=49f1fa5065&e=e8ec62838c>By Margaret Kimberley, Black Agenda Report. The perpetrators of crimes against humanity are often elevated to positions of respect and admiration. It all depends on who did the killing, and who was killed. Now the murderers are being called to account. The new movement in the United States against police and other state violence has inspired this welcome change taking place all over the world. The criminals are being exposed decades and even centuries after their atrocities took place. There is no statute of limitations for murder nor should there be for calling out people who have the blood of millions on their hands. -more- <https://popularresistance.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=33602bebba8fb7dd6e71fb413&id=ccadd17280&e=e8ec62838c>

Policing Is Irrelevant For Public Safety <https://popularresistance.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=33602bebba8fb7dd6e71fb413&id=9b4529eca8&e=e8ec62838c>By Justin Podur, Globetrotter. Recent protests, catalyzed by the murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis, call for an end to racist police violence. With their actions, the protesters have also moved beyond many of the stale policing debates of the recent past. Defund, disband, abolish—people who would never have even heard these words in discussions about the police are now seriously considering them. The breakthroughs in the police debate would not have been possible without the protesters, who have remained steadfast despite being beaten and abused by police everywhere in the United States. -more- <https://popularresistance.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=33602bebba8fb7dd6e71fb413&id=12e9f3f640&e=e8ec62838c>

How Corporations Bankroll US Police Foundations <https://popularresistance.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=33602bebba8fb7dd6e71fb413&id=d357bacd71&e=e8ec62838c>By Gin Armstrong and Derek Seidman, Eyes on the Ties. As calls to defund the police gain traction, bloated police budgets are coming under scrutiny for siphoning public resources away from black and brown communities. While police budgets are typically public documents that must be approved by elected officials, there are other institutions in place with the sole purpose of funneling even more resources toward law enforcement. Police foundations across the country are partnering with corporations to raise money to supplement police budgets by funding programs and purchasing tech and weaponry for law enforcement with... -more- <https://popularresistance.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=33602bebba8fb7dd6e71fb413&id=ad77da669f&e=e8ec62838c>

US Racism’s $13 Trillion Legacy Is Just The Start <https://popularresistance.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=33602bebba8fb7dd6e71fb413&id=47ae22027e&e=e8ec62838c>By Anna Szymanski, Reuters. New York - Around the time the United States formally abolished slavery in 1865, African Americans owned 0.5% of the United States’ wealth. Today they own under 3%, even though around 13% of the population is defined by the U.S. census as “black or African American.” This isn’t an accident of history – it’s a result of government policies and institutional bias. The interest keeps compounding. The value of income lost during slavery is staggering. The U.S. practice lasted for nearly 250 years – almost equivalent to the time from the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776 until today. -more- <https://popularresistance.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=33602bebba8fb7dd6e71fb413&id=e6e624483c&e=e8ec62838c>

Global Experts Alarmed At Signs US Has 'Given Up' Fight To Stop COVID-19 <https://popularresistance.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=33602bebba8fb7dd6e71fb413&id=d5ad556825&e=e8ec62838c>By Julia Conley, Commondreams. Global public health experts are looking on in "alarm and disbelief" as the U.S. economy reopens even as Covid-19 case numbers continue to rise in a number of states, with President Donald Trump signaling he has no intention of calling for more economic shutdowns regardless of the outcome. As The Washington Post reported Friday, newspapers across Europe have recently published articles and editorials expressing shock at the Trump administration's approach to the pandemic. "U.S. Increasingly Accepts Rising Covid-19 Numbers," read a headline this week in the Swiss paper... -more- <https://popularresistance.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=33602bebba8fb7dd6e71fb413&id=374f6d03d7&e=e8ec62838c>

Glasgow’s Far-Right Violence Is A Warning To Anti-Fascists <https://popularresistance.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=33602bebba8fb7dd6e71fb413&id=0e21ca86e2&e=e8ec62838c>By Matt Kerr, TribuneMag. Many of those who organised around the exemplary “no evictions” campaign over the last couple of years gathered to show solidarity and support for people with no vote, no opportunity to work, no money, and living in a new country having fled conditions which were often the stuff of nightmares. Sadly, this was met with a “counter-protest.” Quite how anyone could protest against people being given decent food to eat should be beyond comprehension – but for the far-right, this seemed too much like treating people from other places and races with dignity. -more- <https://popularresistance.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=33602bebba8fb7dd6e71fb413&id=52b2164707&e=e8ec62838c>

Online And Independent: The Future Of Journalism Is Already Here <https://popularresistance.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=33602bebba8fb7dd6e71fb413&id=56c926a8d2&e=e8ec62838c>By Andrew Tarantola, Engadget. The modern news industry is in crisis. For years, formerly stalwart publications have been bought up, hollowed out, and sold for scrap by predatory (and often utterly incompetent) venture capital firms. The recent global outbreak of COVID-19 has further shattered the business as reporters and editors have been furloughed, or outright laid off, en masse. Now, as demonstrations across the country protesting George Floyd’s death at the knees of a Minneapolis cop grow in both scope and intensity, traditional newsrooms are finding their resources to cover these events spread thin. -more- <https://popularresistance.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=33602bebba8fb7dd6e71fb413&id=24bd45ae2a&e=e8ec62838c>

Why And How To Defund The Police <https://popularresistance.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=33602bebba8fb7dd6e71fb413&id=617186d769&e=e8ec62838c>By Jason Kirkpatrick, Counterpunch. The vague and easily misinterpreted call to Defund the Police has been spreading quickly across the USA. Some may have a knee-jerk reaction to “just say no” to this call, but polls show a vast majority of Americans are concerned about improving the lives of people of color across the country. Reforms such as teaching police to de-escalate conflicts and enforcement of body camera use have support of about 90% of Americans. So, what could solutions to the current situation look like, how could they be paid for, and should relative costs realistically be coming out of police budgets? -more- <https://popularresistance.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=33602bebba8fb7dd6e71fb413&id=e4d7f526d4&e=e8ec62838c>

US Lawmakers, Top Official Clash On China’s Involvement In COVID-19 Vaccine <https://popularresistance.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=33602bebba8fb7dd6e71fb413&id=40c287c4e3&e=e8ec62838c>By Jodi Xu Klein, South China Morning Post. US lawmakers and a top official leading the White House’s efforts to produce a coronavirus vaccine clashed on Thursday over whether American health authorities should be working with China to speed up the process. At a Senate Armed Services Committee hearing to confirm General Gustave Perna to co-lead “Operation Warp Speed”, the Trump administration’s initiative to develop a coronavirus vaccine and therapeutics, several lawmakers asked whether the United States is committed to working with China on research. Senator Richard Blumenthal, a Democrat ... -more- <https://popularresistance.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=33602bebba8fb7dd6e71fb413&id=524b253379&e=e8ec62838c>

Trump Hammers Cuba While Cuba Cures The Sick <https://popularresistance.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=33602bebba8fb7dd6e71fb413&id=d017dc7619&e=e8ec62838c>By Medea Benjamin, CODEPINK. A team of 85 Cuban doctors and nurses arrived in Peru on June 3 to help the Andean nation tackle the coronavirus pandemic. That same day, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced another tightening of the sanctions screws. This time he targeted seven Cuban entities, including Fincimex, one of the principal financial institutions handling remittances to the country. Also targeted was Marriott International, which was ordered to cease operations in Cuba, and other companies in the tourism sector, an industry that constitutes 10 percent of Cuba’s GDP and has been devastated globally by the pandemic. -more- <https://popularresistance.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=33602bebba8fb7dd6e71fb413&id=3e0756aa69&e=e8ec62838c>

Juneteenth: Over 500 Strikes In The Last Three Weeks <https://popularresistance.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=33602bebba8fb7dd6e71fb413&id=e24344b718&e=e8ec62838c>By Mike Elk, Payday Report. Longshoremen are going on strike at 29 ports across the West Coast. The UAW is planning to stop production on all assembly lines for 8 minutes and 46 seconds to honor George Floyd. The strikes come as workers have walked off the job at over 500 employers in the last 3 weeks alone. The Washington State General Strike saw workers go on wildcat strikes at over 250 locations across the state according to our Strike Tracking Map, The #ShutDownStem strikes last week also saw scientists go on strike at 109 locations across the US. If the size of these strikes last week is any indication... -more- <https://popularresistance.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=33602bebba8fb7dd6e71fb413&id=9f3999cde3&e=e8ec62838c>

Protesting For Black Lives In Trump Country <https://popularresistance.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=33602bebba8fb7dd6e71fb413&id=394b884609&e=e8ec62838c>By Mesha Jefferson, Otherwords. I grew up biracial in a small, conservative town. Still, after living for years in Austin, moving back to one was a culture shock — it felt like going back in time. For the last three years I’ve lived in Volusia County, Florida — home to Daytona Beach, many small towns and suburbs, and a population that gave about 55 percent of its vote to Donald Trump in 2016. Racial divides are still evident in Daytona and the surrounding areas. Daytona itself is divided by U.S. Route 92, with poorer people of color primarily residing south of the road. The further north you go, the richer — and whiter — it becomes. -more <https://popularresistance.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=33602bebba8fb7dd6e71fb413&id=fa7c1a2084&e=e8ec62838c>
