Hi Anne
Thanks for responding to Souparna’s and my concern, for your apologies, and for letting us all know that you are going to record the session and will make it available. That’s great.
Thanks also for specifically mentioning that
When we planned the call, we had in mind an audience in North America and Chile.
And that you therefore timed your call strategically. In of itself, this makes sense.
But – and as Souparna has asked, and I am also separately in exchange about with others, too – the question is… why ? Did you have in mind and audiences in North America and Chile alone ? And at a time like this ?!
Please know that I ask this not just to dig up the point but because I think that this – and related things – are things that we, and especially those of us from or located in the North, need to reflect on, and especially at this crucial historical moment and as we also talk about building ‘international solidarity’. As I see it, one of the ‘related things’ is that we all now live with a history where by virtue of colonial and continuing extraction (and imbalance, including in terms of brain drain), the knowledge industry (and even the global justice industry) in the North is far, far more well-endowed than in the South – and so it’s not surprising that there is such a preponderance of these initiatives from the North, and even if you have people from the South speaking there. But then this, I think, brings special responsibilities on those in the North – and keeping in mind things such as time zones.
In saying this, I’m not suggesting that there can never be situations where, for good reasons, we might even want to limit the exchange. And in this case, you may well have had such thoughts. But then I think we perhaps have to be a little careful about posting such things on global lists (and/or on lists where things can go global), and that we perhaps need to also say openly that xyz is what we have in mind.
I do hope you will accept the spirit of critical solidarity in which I am offering these additional comments ! I offer them just as thoughts towards constructing the solidarity that we all seek, and need.

We were trying to find a time that zoom would work well--earlier times in the day when internet traffic is higher, zoom sometimes freezes up--and since we are using simultaneous translation, we were very concerned about that.

Unfortunately however, it’s been scheduled at a time when it’ll be impractical for people in more than half the world to join in…! (Time wise, it’s suitable only for people in the Americas, North or South, and cuts all of Africa, Asia, and Europe out of the picture...) This is a big pity, and a good opportunity lost, but I think the organisers normally work with a global perspective and so can only assume that there are good reasons why they have decided to do things this way this time :
