More than 100 organizations from around the world have signed onto an 
open-letter <https://forms.gle/VSbvdVHC65jM9N1bA>to show their support 
for the Shuar Arutam People (PSHA) in the Ecuadorian Amazon as they 
confront a possible COVID-19 outbreak in their territories.

The initiative responds to the PSHA’s urgent demands 
<https://www.facebook.com/cgpsha/photos/pcb.2363827103923667/2363824987257212/?type=3&theater> of 
the Ecuadorian government following the death of two people whose close 
relatives traveled to the Prospectors and Developers Association of 
Canada’s (PDAC) mining fair in Toronto, Canada in March, 2020. In March, 
the PSHA denounced the company for bringing 7 Shuar community members to 
Toronto in supposed representation of the communities, despite not being 
duly elected representatives of the Shuar Arutam People's Assembly. The 
PSHA decried the delegation as part of efforts to undermine their 
categorical rejection of mining in their territory. Upon the 
delegation’s return to Ecuador, 2 of their immediate family members died 
with COVID-19-like symptoms.At least 8 other members of Shuar 
communities are also showing symptoms.

International organizations condemned Solaris Resources’ “ongoing 
interference in Shuar indigenous territory as well as its disdain for 
the self-determining decisions of the PSHA”, noting that“the actions of 
this company and its subsidiary in Ecuador (Lowell Minerals) constitute 
serious threats to peace and health in the Amazon region as a whole.”

Other mining companies from Canada, Australia and China also pose a 
threat to the communities’ ongoing struggle to protect health and the 
environment against resource extraction. The open letter observes that, 
“.../Their activities are causing irreparable damage and putting the 
social fabric of Indigenous communities and mega-diverse Amazonian 
ecosystems at grave risk. The mere presence of company employees in the 
region, due to the possibility of coronavirus transmission, may 
exacerbate these impacts/.”

The letter closes with an expression of solidarity to the PSHA and all 
Indigenous peoples in the Amazon whose territories are threatened by 
COVID-19 and resource extraction.

The President of the Shuar Arutam People's assembly (PSHA), Josefina 
Tunki, remarks, “/In the name of the Shuar Arutam peoples, we are 
grateful for the solidarity and support that organizations from around 
the globe have shown us. For the Shuar Peoples and other nationalities, 
this solidarity represents a greater defense for protection which helps 
us to better defend lives, and protect the water and the forest which 
are fundamental for the Indigenous and non-Indigenous world/”.

Given the difficulties that the Shuar Arutam peoples are now facing, 
this morning the PSHA launched this crowdsourcing campaign to assist 
them to collect funds which will be dedicated to buying community

    COVID-19 en la Amazonía ecuatoriana: Más de 100 organizaciones
    expresan solidaridad con el Pueblo Shuar Arutam y repudian a
    empresas mineras por poner a pueblos Indígenas en grave riesgo.



Se Destaca:

  * Más de 100 organizaciones del mundo expresan solidaridad con el
    Pueblo Shuar Arutam (PSHA) y exigen atención inmediata al posible
    brote COVID-19
  * El gobierno ecuatoriano ordenó una cuarentena nacional sin embargo
    quedó exento el sector minero
  * Empresa minera canadiense, Solaris Resources (Lowell Copper en
    Ecuador) vinculado al posible brote.

Más de 100 organizaciones de todo el mundo han firmado unacarta abierta 
<https://forms.gle/VSbvdVHC65jM9N1bA> para demostrar su apoyo al Pueblo 
Shuar Arutam (PSHA) en la Amazonía ecuatoriana mientras se enfrentan un 
posible brote de COVID-19 en sus territorios.

La iniciativa surgió después de que la PSHA escribió una carta abierta 
<https://www.facebook.com/cgpsha/photos/pcb.2363827103923667/2363824987257212/?type=3&theater>al 
gobierno ecuatoriano exigiendo que se tomaran medidas urgentes, luego de 
la muerte de dos personas vinculadas indirectamente a la conferencia 
anual de la Asociación de Prospectores y Desarrolladores de Canadá 
(PDAC) en Toronto, Canadá que tuvo lugar en marzo de 2020. En ese 
momento, la compañía fue condenada por traer a siete miembros de la 
comunidad Shuar a Toronto, ya que no eran representantes debidamente 
elegidos por Pueblo Shuar Arutam (PSHA).  La dirigencia del  PSHA 
también señaló que estas siete personas ignoraron la decisión de la 
asamblea de rechazar categóricamente la minería en su territorio. A su 
regreso, a Ecuador, dos familiares inmediatos de estos viajeros murieron 
con síntomas similares a COVID-19, y al menos otros 8 miembros de las 
comunidades Shuar muestran síntomas.

Las organizaciones condenaron a Solaris Resources (empresa matriz de 
Lowell Copper) por ”la injerencia permanente de la empresa en territorio 
indígena shuar así como su desdén por las decisiones del 
autodeterminadas del PSHA”. Hicieron notar, además que “...las acciones 
de la empresa y su subsidiaria en Ecuador (Lowell Mineral) constituyen 
serias amenazas a la paz y a la salud de la región amazónica en su 
conjunto.”

Además resaltaron la presencia de otras empresas mineras de Canadá, 
Australia y China como una amenaza a la luchas de las comunidades para 
proteger la salud y el medio ambiente en contra el extractivismo minero. 
Las “actividades [de estas empresas] están causando daños irreparables y 
poniendo en riesgo al tejido social indígena, al ecosistema amazónico y 
su megadiversidad. Su mera presencia en la región, por la posibilidad de 
transmisión de la coronavirus, puede exacerbar estos impactos.”

La carta concluye con una expresión de solidaridad hacia el PSHA y a 
todos los Pueblos Indígenas de la amazonia,  cuyos territorios están 
amenazados por el COVID-19 y el extractivismo.

Por su parte, la PSHA hizo notar que las expresiones de solidaridad 
contribuyen a que su lucha se fortalezca. Segun Josefina Tunki, 
presidenta del PSHA, dijo: “A nombre del Pueblo Shuar Arutam, 
agradecemos el apoyo solidario que nos brindan las organizaciones de 
todas partes del mundo.  La solidaridad para el pueblo shuar y las 
nacionalidades significa un respaldo y un mayor defensa de protección 
que nos sirve para poder defender vidas, y proteger el agua y el bosque 
que es tan fundamental al nivel mundial y también para el mundo Indigena.”

Viendo las dificultades que se tiene en el territorio Shuar Arutam, el 
PSHA lanzó esta mañana una campaña financiera para ayudarles a 
recolectar fondos para entregar botiquines comunitarios y víveres a sus
