Friends,
Aseem Shrivastava and I are giving a joint webinar on Fri May 29,
organised by the South-East Asian feminist network Sangat with Vikalp
Sangam. Please see poster and registration details below. In the
webinar, we take a critical look at the historical origins of the idea
of development in the imperial shadow of World War II, tracing the
history of the idea in independent India since the Gandhi-Nehru debate
of October 1945, and propose an alternative to 'Developmentality', a
'Prakritik Swaraj' or 'Radical Ecological Democracy', built from the
visions of communities, Gandhi, Tagore, Marx,  and many others. We will
present stories of a large number of on ground initiatives in India and
the world, that demonstrate the potential of systemic transformations.

The ideas take on special significance in this Corona conjuncture when
so many millions of workers, farmers, fishers, pastoralists,
craftspersons have faced severel livelihoods and social crises, and many
migrant workers have openly declared that they are not 'walking back' to
the city even if conditions in metropolitan India should improve.
Answers to their challenges will have to be found in rural
revitalisation and alternatives in cities, while challenging
inequalities, discrimination and unsustainability embedded in the
current system.

Ashish
