    In this fourth session we will share a dialogue from the
    perspectives of resistance and re-existence driven by the militant
    and reflective experiences of the Zapatista and autonomous
    communities of Chiapas (Mexico). We will discuss their challenges
    and actions in the context of the global crisis of the pandemic.

*It will be conducted in English and translation to Spanish will be 
available if necessary.*

Presenter

        Xochitl Leyva Solano

Xochitl Leyva-Solano is a researcher and activist, member of alternative 
and anti-systemic networks as well as those promoting decolonizing and 
depatriarchalizing research. Her theoretical work is the outcome of her 
experience accompanying Indigenous women and young people since 1985. 
Currently, she lives and works in the North of Chiapas where she 
co-coordinates a grassroots collective effort called “Agroecovisual 
Autonomies for a Dignified Life”. This initiative is organized with 
Maya-Tseltal authorities and communities as part of their struggle for 
autonomy and self-determination. She is also a researcher and professor 
at the Center for Higher Research of Social Anthropology (CIESAS) in 
Chiapas, México. She has worked since 1987 in Chiapas. She has done 
fieldwork in London, Berlin and Barcelona as much in Yucatán, Michoacán 
and Chiapas (in México).

Among her books are: Poder y Desarrollo Regional (Power and Regional 
Development) published in Mexico in 1993, and Lancandonia al filo del 
agua (Lacandonia at the edge of the water) which was co-authored with 
Gabriel Ascencio in Mexico in 1996. As well as: Encuentros 
Antropológicos: Power, Identity and Mobility In Mexican Society, edited 
with Valentina Napolitano and published in London in 1998; Gobernar en 
la diversidad: experiencias indígenas desde América Latina (Governing in 
Diversity: indigenous experiences in Latin America) co-edited with 
Araceli Burguete and Shannon Speed in Mexico in 2008 and in the same 
year she co-edited with Shannon Speed and Pedro Pitarch, Human Rights in 
the Mayan Region published by Duke University Press.

Presentadora

        Xochitl Leyva Solano

Xochitl Leyva-Solano es investigadora y activista, miembro de redes 
alternativas y antisistémicas, así como promueve la investigación de 
descolonización y depatriarcalización. Su trabajo teórico es el 
resultado de su experiencia acompañando a mujeres y jóvenes indígenas 
desde 1985. Actualmente, vive y trabaja en el norte de Chiapas, donde 
coordina conjuntamente un esfuerzo colectivo de base llamado “Autonomías 
agroecovisuales para una vida digna”. Esta iniciativa se organiza con 
las autoridades y comunidades mayas-tseltales como parte de su lucha por 
la autonomía y la autodeterminación. También es investigadora y 
profesora en el Centro de Investigación Superior de Antropología Social 
(CIESAS) en Chiapas, México. Trabaja desde 1987 en Chiapas. Ha realizado 
trabajos de campo en Londres, Berlín y Barcelona tanto en Yucatán, 
Michoacán y Chiapas (en México).

Entre sus libros se encuentran: Poder y Desarrollo Regional (Poder y 
Desarrollo Regional) publicado en México en 1993, y Lancandonia al filo 
del agua (Lacandonia al borde del agua), coautor con Gabriel Ascencio en 
México en 1996. Como así como: Encuentros Antropológicos: poder, 
identidad y movilidad en la sociedad mexicana, editado con Valentina 
Napolitano y publicado en Londres en 1998; Gobernar en la diversidad: 
experiencias indígenas desde América Latina (Gobernando en la 
diversidad: experiencias indígenas en América Latina) coeditado con 
Araceli Burguete y Shannon Speed en México en 2008 y en el mismo año 
coeditó con Shannon Speed y Pedro Pitarch, Derechos humanos en la región 
maya publicado por Duke University Press.
