Dear friends,
Three years ago, an international gathering <https://www.counterpunch.org/2019/03/01/the-first-international-gathering-of-sowers-and-guardians-of-water/> of sowers and guardians of water in Bolivia collectively wrote the "Declaration of K'aori <http://ecosocialisthorizons.com/2018/12/the-declaration-of-koari/>", which concludes:
"IN RECOGNITION OF THE WATER WAR OF COCHABAMBA:
WE DECLARE APRIL 4th OF EVERY YEAR AN INTERNATIONAL DAY OF STRUGGLE AGAINST THE PRIVATIZATION OF WATER."
At the time of the declaration, it was also planned that on April 4 2021 (tomorrow), a second international gathering of sowers and guardians of water would be convened in the Lumaco Municipality of Chile, hosted by the Mapuche, with the goal of "promoting the inclusion of more peoples and indigenous, original and campesino nations at a global level."
The combined circumstances of the Covid-19 pandemic, and ongoing widespread political struggle in Chile, have made this planned gathering impossible. However the Mapuche hosts are working to convene a virtual gathering: Please save the date for April 8, 12pm Chile time, to tune in for reports from three Mapuche representatives from three different bioregions.... Another email with details will be sent out shortly, please stay tuned and pass it on.
In the meantime, if you are able to convene your respective organizations, collectives, and movements for the day of action tomorrow (April 4), it is suggested that, complementary to any direct collective actions on behalf of Mother Water, the following three activities may be taken: 1) collectively read The Declaration of K'oari <http://ecosocialisthorizons.com/2018/12/the-declaration-of-koari/>, 2) watch this short documentary (in spanish with english subtitles): "Sowers and Guardians of Water" <http://ecosocialisthorizons.com/2019/02/movie-sowers-and-guardians-of-water-bolivia-2018/>, <http://ecosocialisthorizons.com/2019/02/movie-sowers-and-guardians-of-water-bolivia-2018/> and 3) collectively begin the process of making a water map of your bioregion (details below)
sincerely,
Quincy Saul

Water Mapping guide (from the Combined Strategy and Plan of Action of the First Ecosocialist International <http://ecosocialisthorizons.com/2017/12/the-first-ecosocialist-international-combined-strategy-and-plan-of-action/>):
> We will organize ourselves in communities to make maps of our territories, in which we will locate:
1. Our wise elders, the People’s Teachers and Living Books who inhabit our watersheds; our grandmothers who preserve memory.
2. With their help, we will map the watercourses; the rivers, lagoons, springs, and wetlands. We will locate which ones are alive in order to protect them, and which ones have been lost in order to rescue them. We will reintroduce and protect the species of flora and fauna which our grandparents remember living in those places, which are vital parts of the water cycle.
3. We will identify in our watersheds all the organizations and institutions which are involved in the protection of nature, and we will organize ourselves in communities to defend our rivers. We will also include in these maps sacred sites, and the trails of wild animals.
4. We will identify on these maps the families and/or agribusiness transnationals which maintain monocultures and use agrochemicals that contaminate the water, in order to collectively question as communities the causes and effects of this model, and to share knowledges, technologies and techniques which will allow us to return to the original models of agriculture in harmony with nature.
5. We will identify on these maps the zones of logging and we will organize ourselves to stop it.
6. We will identify on these maps the enterprises of national or transnational capital; the means of communication, the organizations, institutions and actors (armed, foreign, military, religious, visiting, etc), who have appropriated and are commercializing our surface, ground or rain water. We will also map the national laws which permit this.
7. We will map the infrastructure related to potable water and served water, along with the process of deposition in our water of industrial and human residues.
8. We will organize ourselves in communities to order the use of territory in our watersheds: steep inclines to be reforested with trees; flat areas for protecting cultivation, etc.
9. Equally, we will identify our productive capacities: we know that we are not monoproducers and that with Trueke we can break our dependence on money.
