India in movement…, Peasants in movement…, Workers in movement…, Resistance in movement…, Solidarity in movement !

The government in our country today is dedicated to helping industrialists become millionaires and pushing workers to the brink of death. The unconstitutional legal scope of the anti-farmer laws and anti-workers’ codes is not just an attack on the rights of workers, but also on the process of acquiring justice and redressal. Just like the nation witnessed the severity of the migrant crisis last year, this time there is another economic and hunger crisis looming before these millions of workers.

In this situation, it is necessary to challenge the exploiters and leaders who capitalise on a state of lockdown. The Samyukt Kisan Morcha and the All-India United front of Workers’ Unions have issued calls for programs on 1st May to propagate the message of farmers-workers solidarity in all villages, towns and at all regional levels. We must fully involve ourselves in and support this coordinated, collective call.

Along with resistance, National Alliance of People's Movements also proposes a pro-active people’s campaign for registration of workers under the below protective labour laws:

● Inter-State Migrant Labour Act, 1979

● Building and Other Construction Workers Act, 1996

● Unorganized Workers Social Security Act, 2008

1st May 2021: Let us demonstrate solidarity between workers and farmers!

Burn copies of the three anti-farmer laws and anti-worker labour codes!

Start a registration campaign for “unprotected” workers !

Inquilab Zindabad to all workers and farmers,

1st May is the day to acknowledge the struggles and dignity of workers! It is important to declare solidarity, not just internationally, but also with all workers of our country whose long years of post-independence struggle has resulted in attaining many workers’ rights. This solidarity is vital in resisting the capitalist onslaught that aims to crush these very rights of workers.

Farmers are also workers and so are those that work as farm labourers, all workers called ‘unorganized’ and kept “unprotected”, those working in forests, fisheries or rearing livestock, industrial workers, contract workers, domestic workers, front line workers or the millions who work in the service industry .... all are workers.

There are countless artisans like tailors, carpenters, street vendors, drivers or our agricultural workers, who are all “unprotected workers” after all. Neither do they receive pensions nor a provident fund! Why? Where is the “social security” when they cannot retire, nor do they have sufficient money for basic needs in their old age? When will the women who work, day and night in the field of “unorganised labour” acquire complete social security and justice, apart from an acknowledgement of the value of their work?

Mandatory registration of every worker who falls under the ambit of these laws must be ensured. Seek out the relevant forms at the office of the Labour Dept/ District Collector / SDM / Magistrate. You may seek out the same online on the State Labour Department websites/ portals. With the leadership and participation of workers, launch a campaign for “Worker Registration”. Announce the inauguration of this campaign in a village or town, on the 1st of May, 2021.

Despite limited time, let us come together to organise for Farmers – Workers Unity Day! Follow all mandated Covid safety protocols and in places where lockdown is enforced, instead of one large event, you may have small events in different places, with farmers, labourers, our allies and the youth in attendance, with the work tools of farmers and workers, in hand. Many of you are equipped with social media as well. To the youth - today we must know of the history and strength of people’s struggle, pay homage to peasants and martyrs and contribute to protection of constitutional values as well as the rights of farmers and labourers to a life of dignity and the right to livelihood.
