Hi Christian and Everyone,
In my work and the work of El Cambalache we generally move away from development, be it sustainable or otherwise. This is because development is imposed from outside of a community and is focused on implementing capitalism and alternative versions of capitalism without working towards the self-governance and autonomy of the communities identified as in need of development. Top down approaches, especially those implemented by international non-government organizations are often funded by the same massive transnational corporations that are interested in exploiting both people and non-human others through various forms of resource extraction instead of supporting mechanisms of non-capitalist heterodox economies that have been resisting capitalism/coloniality and create well-being. We work towards autonomy, self-governance, community feminism and decolonial practice. In Bolivia (In el alto or la paz) you have Silvia Rivera Cusicanqui and the Chix’i collective who work in anti-coloniality. Also check out Ayllus and their governance structure in the Peruvian and Bolivian Andes. In Brazil, Venezuela and many other parts of south america and the Carribbean you can look into quilombolas. Check out the work of Jose Angel Quintero Weir, Jaime Martinez Luna, Aura Cusme, Ochy Curiel, Yasnay Aguilar, Gladys Tzul Tzul, and my own work and that of El Cambalache in the links below.
Good luck out there
Best,
Erin

I’m doing field research in Bolivia on exploring the application of Buen Vivir as a new-old model for bringing about societal change towards real sustainable development. I’m interested in learning about successful models of localisation, circular economies, wholistic education, self-reliance, etc. from similar initiatives around the world that are also exploring pre-colonial, pre-modern ways of being. Examples would be Swaraj and Ubuntu. I welcome networking and exchanging resources with you. Thank you!
