Our new GTI Forum grapples with a critical question for the future: Can 
Human Solidarity Globalize?

The possibility that it can (not the probability!) is a basic tenet of a 
Great Transition. Reaching a decent civilization in this century depends 
on the enlargement of human identity to the scale of the planet. Rigid 
skeptics dismiss this prospect, while even those attuned to emergent 
possibilities may at times doubt human solidarity can counter the human 
particularism so pervasive throughout history and in the present day.

Still, the case for possible-ism compels. Social evolution is a saga of 
the astonishing expansion of identity and solidarity from clans and 
tribes to nations, world religions, and beyond. Moreover, science 
continues to add empirical and theoretical weight to the importance of 
cooperation and altruism to human society. Not least, the contemporary 
condition of one shared destiny urges us to embrace a global locus for 
institutions, reciprocity, and empathy.

Richard Falk, a pioneer in illuminating the paths and pitfalls toward 
our common future, opens the discussion with an essay reflecting on 
prospects for global solidarity and a “politics of impossibility.” The 
respondents on the first panel—*Debating the Prospects*—weigh in from a 
range of theoretical perspectives. The second panel—*Making It 
Happen*—focuses on pragmatic ways forward.
