This article offers an initial analyses the mass protests that began in Belarus following the presidential elections of August 2020. Written ‘in the heat of events' it has the character of preliminary observations. The authors begin with the background and context of events and the outcomes of the economic and social development of the Republic of Belarus during the 25 years of rule by Lukashenko. A preliminary analysis of the social and class make-up both of the protesters and of those who (...)

To understand Alexei Naval'nyi's significance, one needs some idea of the nature of the political regime in the Russian Federation.
This is a ‘Bonapartist'-type regime, in which the state administration, and proximity to it, are the principal sources of accumulation. Consequently, for this administration, holding onto power is the overriding interest of the state (the constitution was recently amended to allow Vladimir Putin to remain president until 2035), and corruption is at its core. This (...)

Doctors becoming activists: a prescription for solidarity in Belarus and Russia <https://europe-solidaire.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=5c732dd5ee65845cf20fd724a&id=3b937c033b&e=6b46c9ae1f>

Healthcare workers in Belarus and Russia are breaking new ground in the fight for decent conditions and against state repression.
Doctors and medical staff, notoriously underpaid and neglected in post-Soviet states, are on the front lines of the fight against COVID-19 - and increasingly at the fore of civic activism against state repression. They've staged pickets, joined street protests, and launched campaigns, themselves coming under immense pressure from authorities.
In Belarus, in (...)

Mass protests occurred in most regions of Russia on 23 and 31 January 2021. The total number of protestors throughout the country on 23 January was put by the authorities at fewer than 10,000, but by the opposition much more. The largest of the demonstrations was, as usual, in Moscow, where according to the official count 4000 people came onto the streets, while unofficial figures put much bigger number. Similar numbers took part in the protests on 31 January, but this time the clashes were (...)

Russia: Mass protests calling for Navalny's release on 23 January, set to continue <https://europe-solidaire.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=5c732dd5ee65845cf20fd724a&id=5983276fd3&e=6b46c9ae1f>

On 23 January, large-scale protests were held in Russia, the main unifying demand of which was the release of opposition leader Alexei Navalny, who had been arrested a week earlier just after his return from Berlin (where he was being rehabilitated after being poisoned).
On the eve of the rally, after his arrest, Navalny's campaign team presented a video about Vladimir Putin's secret palace, which cost about 100 billion roubles (about $13 million) and was astonishingly opulent and senseless. (...)

Since August 9, Belarus has been the scene of popular protests against what is perceived to be the fraudulent reelection of President Alexander Lukashenko, who has been in power since 1994. The presidential election results gave him a victory with 80 percent of the votes, a figure far from the counts seen by election observers.
There are thousands of audio and video recordings of electoral fraud, showing the rewriting of results, the substitution of one ballot box for another, and multiple (...)

Russia has had an eventful week and it's not even finished. First, Alexey Navalny flew back to Moscow, then he was immediately arrested upon crossing the border, and the next day his team published a video illustrating Vladimir Putin's own corruption and calling upon all citizens to come out to the streets against the government on January 23. What is the Russian left to think of all this? Navalny is certainly not its own, but should it stay away from the protests and the brewing political (...)
