[WSMDiscuss] Still demanding JUSTICE for Berta -Trial's 39th day

After the trial that found seven people guilty of the murder of Berta Cáceres in 2018, the trial against one of the co-perpetrators of the crime, David Castillo, began on April 6 and is still ongoing. Yesterday it reached its [39th session](https://www.aquiabajo.com/blog/2021/6/15/day-thirty-nine-trial-against-david-castillo), and will still be happening until the end of the month. Among other things, COPINH, the Civic Council of Popular and Indigenous Organizations of Honduras in which Berta was an activist and in which her daughters and son now also participate, has denounced the delays in the process caused by the defense of the accused.

David Castillo was manager of the company DESA (Desarrollos Energéticos S. A.), responsible for the Aguas Zarca hydroelectric project opposed by Berta Cáceres, COPINH and the Lenca community.

But David Castillo is also a US-trained military intelligence officer. He is accused of planning the assassination of Berta Cáceres.

However, as COPINH also demands, even if justice is achieved against the aforementioned, the intellectual authors of the crime have yet to be included. The trial is revealing something that was well known: the responsibility of the highest levels of the Honduran state and the state itself in the crime.

Yesterday, June 15, 2011, Berta Zúñiga, one of Berta Cáceres' daughters and current leader of COPINH, testified. Bertita remains firm in this just struggle that has the world expectant and that is taking so much time and effort. These situations are always difficult, when you have to recall sad, endearing events, and even more so when you have to stand in front of the perpetrators of your mother's death. According to the Court, Berta Zuñiga did not relate "only what her mother told her, but facts that she knows for sure".

Yesterday, David Castillo's defense also presented its first witness, Ramón Rosa, former DESA Community Relation Officer. Rosa also participated in attacks against COPINH and Berta Cáceres in the community of Río Blanco at different times.
