The article by Mirelowitz and Malapanis at
https://world-outlook.com/2022/10/11/ukrainian-counteroffensive-prompts-desperate-dangerous-moves-by-russia/
correctly
characterizes Russian moves as desperate, but may underestimate the danger
to countries other than Russia and also underestimate the determination of
Russians to defend their imperialist country if it comes under open attack.
Such an escalation has been promised by a high EU official in case Moscow
uses any nuclear weapons:

"The European Union's High Representative for Foreign Policy, Josep
Borrell, warned Thursday that the EU, NATO and the United States will
respond to Russia should Moscow decide to carry out a nuclear attack on
Ukraine, saying the Russian Army would be 'annihilated'" (
https://www.msn.com/.../borrell-warns-russian.../ar-AA12UFCi).

Much less than annihilation of the Russian armed forces would certainly
trigger a major conventional war in Europe beyond Ukraine's borders and
could easily lead to further use of nuclear weapons. Both parties, Russia
and NATO, are more or less locked into postures of escalation from the
current status quo. We are on the brink.
