In 1874,the Satyashodhak Samaj (Truth Seekers Society), a well-known anti-caste collectiveof lower-caste activists in Maharashtra, in a village near Pune, distributed freecopies of Jatibhed Viveksar (Reflections on the Institution of Caste), abook whose author is identified simply as Ek Hindu (‘One Hindu’ or ‘AHindu’). Adoptingthe text as an ideological resource for its activism, the Samaj took it topeasants and artisans, who constituted the majority of the lower castes inMaharashtra. As they did with much of their early literature, it is likely thatSamaj activists read the text aloud to them. Anti-caste critics had recognizedthe potential of the text nearly a decade earlier.
In 1861, the firstedition of the text was published by Vasudev Navrange, a lower-caste publisherand an anti-caste activist; the second edition in 1865 received support from JotiraoPhule, the founder of the Samaj, and arguably the most prominent anti-caste
activist in latenineteenth-century western India. The anti-caste activists’ enthusiasm for JatibhedViveksar was propelled by the fact that the text was one of the first publishedcritiques of caste from a lower-caste perspective.

My final words of advice to you are educate, agitate and organize; have faith in yourself. With justice on our side I do not see how we can lose our battle. The battle to me is a matter of joy. The battle is in the fullest sense spiritual. There is nothing material or social in it. For ours is a battle not for wealth or for power. It is battle for freedom. It is the battle of reclamation of human personality.
